Soliders performing gun salute at Edinburgh Castle105th Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers)

105th Regiment is responsible for firing Royal Salutes in Edinburgh, Belfast and Stirling.

In 1859 various volunteer artillery battalions were raised in response to a French invasion scare and since that date numerous volunteer (later Territorial) regiments were raised in Scotland and Northern Ireland, many of them serving with distinction in both World Wars.

105th Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) was formed in 1986 from a number of predecessor units.

The Regiment is the only Territorial Army unit of the Royal Artillery throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Regiment is equipped with the 105mm Light Gun.

Gun Salute at Edinburgh Castle

The Regiment currently has soldiers deployed on Operations in Afghanistan, and its members have also recently served with distinction in Iraq and Cyprus. The Regiment has Troops permanently stationed in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Arbroath and Kirkcaldy as well as the northern Shetland Islands and a
Battery in Northern Ireland.

The motto of the Royal Regiment of Artillery is ‘Ubique’ (Everywhere) with an accompanying motto
‘Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt’ (Whither Right and Glory Lead).

The Regiment also fires the famous One O’Clock Gun at
Edinburgh Castle. This has been fired every day since 7 June 1861. It was used to help mariners correctly set their watches. Originally, the gun used was a ’25 Pounder’, but after 110 years
in service, it was replaced by the L118 Light Gun, which you see today. These are identical to the guns used by the Regiment on Operations.
